Lab baby

My PI had her baby this week!!! In a ridiculous display of professor geekdom, she texted us 2 hours after giving birth. We got 3 emails that night and all were about lab stuff and journal club. Not even a single baby picture yet!

A couple other professors have asked me how things are going now that I am 'running the lab.' It is funny because I'm really not. All the grad students are pretty independent and the lab tech ends up with more responsibility than I have for the daily ins and outs of the lab. Plus, Rt-H is ridiculously plugged in. So far, the students have bounced a few more questions off me than normal since it is easier to ask and get an immediate answer than email Rt-H but nothing too out of the ordinary. We will have to see how 3 weeks of absence differs from 3 days....

Rule with an iron fist! Keep those students in line. :-)

Wow. I didn't email about work for at least 12 hours (although it may have been that long before I got my laptop brought to me in the hospital).

It did take a few days before I sent photos and an announcement. I definitely answered TA questions before that.

Wow, and she's only taking 3 weeks off? Damn!

Good luck holding down the fort.

Unbalanced- I hope I can do that remotely. I wanted to sneak away and work from home for a few weeks!

profgrrl- She smuggled her iPhone into the hospital. We've heard less since she got home!

PPD- She will be out for 3-4 weeks and then only come in twice a week (with the baby) for about 4 months.

Wow that is quick - almost like the PI at my old place who was rumored to back in work the day after!

the 'running the lab' thing, my boss does that quite a bit to me - he is away for a significant chunk of the year. I'm really not either - no real power, but it is nice and nice that he still trusts me with things after a year of doing this.

Dr. J- It is really telling of how the PI is less and less involved in the lab duties themselves. Sort of the flip side of the professors moving away from bench work to writing and funding.
