I don't know why, but it seems like I shouldn't go to work with wet hair anymore. I doubt anyone ever notices and if they do, I doubt they care....but this morning I was overcome by the idea that I might look like a total slacker* by continuing this trend. It isn't like every year I go through this when it gets cold, it hasn't ever bothered me before. All of a sudden, it just seems like there is no way I should graduate if I can't even manage to take 5 minutes to dry my hair.
*and also like a wet poodle/drowned rat.

I'm guilty of going to class with wet hair, I usually just pull it back in a bun. I guess its a bad habit from swimming all these years... my hair has actually frozen before which was pretty sweet....
My housemate can get away with it though, since she has really long curly hair that she wets/gels every morning so it actually looks good. I on the other hand have been compared to the girl in the "Ring" (?) or some other horror film I've never seen before.
I just don't have the time/engery to put that effort in really.... heck, don't blow dryers ruin your hair anyway?
Funny, I had a similar thought the other day. I suddenly thought that I should start dressing a little nicer on days when I'm only working at my desk and not in the lab. As though someone working on a dissertation should look professional or something. Not one person in my or the adjacent lab group dresses in anything better than teeshirts and jeans.
My hair dries by the time I get to work so no one really knows that I didn't make time to dry it, but it does look pretty crappy all day if I don't blow it out at least a little. But I know what you mean.
Isn't self-dried hair kinda sexy?
And healthier for the hair than drying it...
Ah, but think of the greenness of it! You are saving energy!
"it just seems like there is no way I should graduate if I can't even manage to take 5 minutes to dry my hair."
I have been thinking this way about lots of things lately: staying on top of work, packing lunch, running in the morning AND getting to work on time looking put-together, knowing where my travel stuff is when I leave myself 30 minutes to pack... Somehow I feel I need to be so much more organized and on top of things before I can graduate!
I shower at work after cycling in, and can't go anywhere near a hair drier without turning into a giant fuzz ball. So wet (and v. curly) hair it is... I've had a few comments but no-one really seems to care all that much. If I have an important early meeting with people from other departments, I shower at home and take the bus.
A couple of good towel rubs before you leave the house should do it. Or, you can just say you come by it naturally, my hair is still wet underneath at noon and I shower at 4:15!
Mom
Eugenie- I think that might be part of my problem- I always end up pulling it back. Maybe drying it, I'll leave it down? I used to love when it would freeze at the bus stop as a kid!
EGF- Exactly! There has got to be some imposter syndrome underlying this. Thinking of what dissertation writers or graduating students should look like vs what we do.
HGG- I think it can be sexy for some- especially if it is wavy or curly. Mine is just ultra-straight and fine so it ends up looking stringy.
Belle- You have got me there. Can I make up for it by getting dressed in the dark? wait....that won't help my 'put together look'.....=)
Sciencegirl- haha...there have been many days I didn't run in the afternoon because I forgot to pack the right stuff in the morning. Again though, it is interesting to hear our own weird ideas of what we should be to graduate....
Cath- Using the gym more has been in my head lately. If I shower there, dry hair will never happen! At least you have the curliness on your side.
Mom- Your commute is much longer than mine. And totally different since it is curly!
Well, if it helps any, you're totally not alone. I never dry my hair. Hairdressers always marvel at how undamaged it is. Up-side? It looks nice when I do actually get around to drying it. :P
